It was announced this afternoon that Bolton youngster Luca Connell has been selected for the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2020 qualifiers next month.

The news is obviously a huge achievement for the 18-year-old who only made his debut for Bolton in January.

However, Connell’s call-up could cause some serious problems for Bolton and their attempts to keep the promising youngster at the club.

See, for the talented youth prospect to be selected, it puts him squarely in the spotlight and, if we want to see Connell at Bolton next season, that’s not going to be ideal.

Of course, it’s great to see one of Bolton’s own academy graduates making a name for himself on the international stage, however, it does mean that he’s very much on show for the Premier League clubs who have been eyeing up a move for the youngster.

It’s been rumoured that Tottenham and Wolves are the latest Premier League clubs to have shown interest in Connell while Championship side Leeds look likely to make a move for the young Irishman as well.

With Bolton in such a dire situation financially and the prospect of Premier League football very much within Connell’s grasp, Wanderers could find it very difficult to keep hold of the Liverpool-born 18-year-old.
