It’s the type of goal that’d make it into one of those ‘football’s funniest moments’ or ‘worst blunders in football history’ programmes on TV.
Wigan’s third goal against Bolton on Saturday will surely give Remi Matthews a few sleepless nights this week.
After putting together a string of strong performances in recent games, the Wanderers keeper made an error so unforgivable that he could lose his place in the side.
The goal in question can be seen in the highlights below. 30 seconds in to be exact.
Matthews’ error perfectly summed up Bolton’s lacklustre performance in Saturday’s local derby and Wanderers’ season at large.
His error gifted Wigan their third goal, in a game where Bolton gifted Wigan their first win in eight games and all but sealed their own relegation to League One.
Thankfully, the mistake should be a one-off. However, the fact that Matthews allowed it to happen at all doesn’t help the keeper’s cause.
The worst thing about the goal is that Matthews even looked to make sure there wasn’t a player lurking there. And yet he failed to spot the Wigan player behind him. Truly a moment the Bolton keeper will hope to forget.
It’s a thoroughly comedic goal but for all the wrong reasons. In several year’s time, when we’ve won our third straight Premier League title, we’ll look back on that error and laugh. But for fans at the rain-soaked DW Stadium, it was anything but humorous.
For a goalkeeper playing in a Sunday League match, that sort of error is unacceptable. But for a goalkeeper in the second tier of English football, it’s unforgivable.
Matthews has been in superb form of late, but should the goalie keep his place in the side after that howler?
