Bolton’s defensive injury list added another name at the weekend as Jake Wright was forced off against Sunderland. Yoan Zouma appears to be the most likely option to replace him but is he the best choice?

After conceding 17 goals in the five games before Keith Hill took charge at Bolton, the dramatic improvement against Oxford United and Sunderland has been particularly noticeable in the last week.

Sure, Hill’s arrival at Bolton, the 6-1 thrashing away at Rotherham, wasn’t the best way to welcome yourself into a new job but the fact that Wanderers have remedied that with just one goal in the last two games, against tough opposition, is a promising turnaround.

However, a key figure in Wanderers’ defence since Keith Hill took over is Sheffield United loanee Jake Wright who, unfortunately, picked up an injury in the 1-1 against Sunderland, leaving the Bolton boss with plenty to think about.

The most likely option to plug the holes in Bolton’s defence is 21-year-old Frenchman Yoan Zouma given that he’s the most experienced of the available options and has impressed in the opening weeks of the season.

Despite that though, Keith Hill may look to other options after criticising the young defender after a late handball gave Sunderland a penalty which snatched away Bolton’s first win of the season.

With options limited in defence, thanks to the injuries of Harry Brockbank, Liam Edwards, Josh Earl, Joe Bunney and now Jake Wright, the choices that fall before Keith Hill are, of course, Yoan Zouma but also Jordan Boon and Adam Senior. The latter has reportedly impressed Keith Hill since he took over according to the Bolton News.

Whoever gets the nod to partner the experienced Jack Hobbs will no doubt have satisfied Keith Hill’s high expectations and the fans, who have singled out Yoan Zouma as a fan-favourite already, will surely want to see the 21-year-old Frenchman given chance to make amends after conceding the penalty against Sunderland.

Of course, it’s Bolton boss Keith Hill that will have the final say on the matter but of the available options, Yoan Zouma does appear to be the best option for the tough task of facing Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Hopefully, we’ll have some hint over the next day or two from Keith Hill but we’re more than likely to find out the manager’s team selection on Saturday where Bolton will be aiming for their first win of the season.
