Bolton manager Ian Evatt says there can be a positive after the ‘humbling’ loss to Wigan.

Wanderers’ lost 0-4 at home to Wigan Athletic yesterday lunchtime, which saw Bolton’s unbeaten start to the 23/24 season come to a close.

Two goals each from Charlie Wyke and Stephen Humphrys gave Wigan all three points in what was an exceptional performance from Bolton’s nearby neighbours.

Wigan’s thumping of the Trotters means they are now in positive points, having started the season on -8 points. The Latics are one of three teams left in League One to remain unbeaten alongside Portsmouth and Blackpool.

Despite the result, Evatt, who had his touchline suspension reprieved following his sending-off on Tuesday night against Fleetwood, was clear to point out when speaking to The Bolton News about the stats and how his side was unlucky going forward but did not defend well enough at all.

“We feel hard done to but we can’t make excuses,” Evatt said. “There were opportunities today to step up but we just haven’t done, so back to the drawing board, so to speak, and we will work hard to put things right against Burton.

“If you look at the stats – and there’s only one that matters, we lost 4-0 – but we had 20 shots and four of them were on target. We had 65-66 per cent possession of the ball and we have to make that pay. We just lost out on every moment.

“Every time we got into the final third and created an opportunity we didn’t take it but every time they went near our box they took their chances.

“It is something we didn’t see coming but maybe being humbled this early in the season can be a positive and we can recover from this and make sure it never happens again.”

Bolton will be hoping to get back to their best when they face Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon.
