Bolton must be smart with summer signings after surprise reported switch

It looks as though Bolton Wanderers utility man MJ Williams is heading for the exit doors this summer as a surprise switch to MK Dons looms.

Pete O’Rourke reported the proposed deal on Monday evening, leaving Bolton with the task of replacing his versatility this summer.

Williams made 100 appearances in total during his stay at the TS Community Stadium, finding the net once and providing five assists during a spell in which he featured as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder and centre-back.

The Liverpool academy graduate featured 35 times for Ian Evatt’s side last season as they reached the League One play-off spots and lifted the Papa John’s Trophy, so it is important that the Wanderers find a suitable replacement.

Bolton have made five additions already this summer with Nathan Baxter, Josh Dacres-Cogley, Joel Coleman, Dan Nlundulu and Will Forrester walking through the doors.

From that bunch, just Forrester is capable of playing in one of the positions previously covered by Williams at centre-back.

With that being said, and one position ticked off the list, the ideal candidate for Evatt’s squad would now be a midfielder capable of performing both box-to-box and defensive duties.

There have been no clear links to a player of that description so far, but based on the Wanderers’ transfer activity so far it would suggest that they are in the market for free agents between the ages of 22 and 27. Players with experience, but those who are also capable of developing further in Greater Manchester.

Who could replace MJ Williams at Bolton?

Recently released from Newcastle United, somebody like Matty Longstaff springs to mind. 14 Premier League appearances to his name, followed by a string of loan moves before his release. The former Toon midfielder has a point to prove.

Another example could be released QPR man Luke Amos. 26 years of age, 115 senior appearances and likely willing to drop down a division to find regular football. Amos is also incredibly versatile having played in every outfield position except striker and winger in his career so far.

Bolton must replace Williams, so it will be interesting to keep an eye on how they respond.
