Bolton joint hunt for experienced free agent

Bolton Wanderers have formed part of the chase for former Sheffield Wednesday defender Jack Hunt.

According to Pete O’Rourke, Ian Evatt’s side are looking to secure a deal for the 32-year-old but face stiff competition from QPR, Huddersfield Town and Charlton Athletic.

Hunt played a bit-part role in the Owls’ promotion to the Championship last season, making 26 appearances over the course of the campaign before being released this summer.

The right-back’s injury struggles were one of the main reasons behind his lack of involvement compared to previous seasons with Wednesday, but he is now looking for pastures new nonetheless.

Bolton are one of the options despite already having two right-backs at their disposal. Gethin Jones made 46 appearances for Evatt’s men last season, and Josh Dacres-Cogley arrived on a free from Tranmere Rovers this summer.

Hunt has made 484 appearances over the course of his career so far having spent time with the Owls, Bristol City, Chesterfield, Rotherham United, Nottingham Forest, Barnsley and Huddersfield. The latter of which are hopeful that he will return to their ranks.

He is most renowned for his spells at Wednesday. The Englishman first joined the Owls on loan from Crystal Palace during the 2015/16 season before signing permanently the following campaign. He stayed at Hillsborough for two years before signing for the Robins, then returned to his former stomping ground again from 2021 until this summer.

What next for Hunt?

It is likely that Hunt would be signed to provide further squad depth for the Wanderers should a deal be made. Jones will not be looking to budge from his starting spot in the XI, whereas Dacres-Cogley will be determined to make an impact following his recent arrival.

The free agent strikes as a leader, so would no doubt be a good addition to the dressing room. However, it is unclear whether Hunt would be willing to take on that kind of role at this stage of his career which means the jury is still out on this one.

A proven player at Championship and League One level, it will not be too long before his next step is sealed.
